Adding / Installing themes

Adding new themes is quick and easy. Expand the ‘Appearance’ tab and select ‘Add new themes’:

Adding themes

You’ll now see that you have several options, you can find themes with certain features or colours and perform a search. Or you can search for keywords, or the name of a theme that you have seen elsewhere. You can also view the currently featured blogs that WordPress is showcasing, or you can view the latest themes that have been added or those that have been recently updated.

Whichever option you choose you will end up with a series of themes that you can select:

Each theme can be previewed and if you are happy with the way it looks then you can simply press ‘Install’ to add it to your collection. Once you press install you’ll see the following screen:

This allows you to activate the theme immediately. If you do not want to activate it immediately you can activate it at any time by clicking on ‘Themes’ (it will now appear alongside the standard themes that come with WordPress). You can also delete it from this screen and you can install as many themes as you like.

What if I cannot find the theme I want?

If you have been searching for themes on Google and you find one you absolutely love you can simply write down its name and search for it as above. However, not all themes will be listed with WordPress. If this is the case you need to download the theme from the site you found it on and upload it to your blog.

Don’t worry; this is easier than it sounds.

Simply click the ‘Upload’ option on the ‘Add new themes’ page:

The theme that you have downloaded should have been in ZIP format, so browse your PC for the ZIP file that you downloaded:

Once you have found the ZIP file for the theme and selected it you can click ‘Install now’ and the theme will be installed and ready to use just like the others.
