Installing WordPress

First of all, you need to log into your eXtend from Blue Globe control panel [login here]. Once you have done this you will see all of the things that you can manage and install. Before you scroll down and hit the WordPress logo you first need to delete any files that reside in your ‘public html’ folder, otherwise WordPress will not install.

So, click on file manager:

Make sure you are in the ‘public html’ folder, then right click on ‘index.html’ (which should be the only file in the ‘public html’ folder when your hosting package is first created) and select ‘Delete’:

Once this file has been deleted you can click on ‘Home’ (towards the top left of the screen) to get back to your main eXtend control panel.

Now that file has been deleted WordPress has an empty root directory to install into. This means that when you install WordPress into the root directory it will appear on your domain name. In this example the blog would appear when you went to: http://www.world-of-beaches.co.uk – which, presumably, is exactly what you want.

The only time you might want to install to a directory is if the blog was just one part of a larger website. In this case: http://www.world-of-beaches.co.uk would point to the homepage of the website and a menu item on that page might link to your blog – which would be installed to a directory such as /blog. So to access your blog you’d enter: http://www.world-of-beaches.co.uk/blog.

Anyway, we’re going to install to the root directory because we’re setting up a blog, not a website, so we want the domain name to lead straight to the blog. So, scroll down in eXtend until you see the CGI scripts available to install, and click on WordPress (ignore the other CGI scripts, if you had chosen a Blog package then you would only see blog options and not the others).

Once you have clicked on the WordPress logo you’ll see the following screen:

This screen explains the installation directory that we looked at earlier. Assuming that you want the blog installed to the main domain of your site then leave the box ‘installation directory’ blank. If you want to put your blog into a subdirectory then do so now by typing the directory name into this box – as explained above.

When you are satisfied, click ‘Install Now’.

You should then see the following screen, to finish the installation click on the web address:

You should then see the following screen:

As stated by WordPress, don’t worry too much about the title of the blog or your email address as these can be easily changed at a later time as many times as you like.

In the unlikely event that you do not see the above screen then you may have to enter the web address for it manually: http://whatever-your-domain-is-called.co.uk/wp-admin/install.php

And then… well, that is all there is to it. Simply click ‘Install WordPress’, make a note of the password and click log in:

The username you are given will default to ‘admin’, but this can be altered later.
